The French Laundry, the only Michelin 3 start restaurant in Northern California, occupies a quaint stone building, built in 1900 as a saloon, and later converted to a French steam laundry. Go west Young Man! (He Was the First to Discover Premium Yountville Real Estate)
In 1831, Yountville’s founder, George Calvert Yount (b.1794) became the first white settler in the Napa Valley. Born in Missouri, starting off as a farmer, fought in the war of 1812, ran into business difficulties, and left his wife and three children behind to head west. (Let's not jump to conclusions, she may have kicked him out...) He wound up in Sonoma as a carpenter and fur trapper. In 1836 he obtained from the Mexican government the first land grant received by a United States citizen. Naming his land Caymus Rancho, he eventually had the land surveyed for a town in 1855, and named it Sebastopol. Too bad that name was already taken, belonging to a town in Sonoma (check out listings in Sebastopol when you have a chance). So, in 1867, two years after Yount's death, the town changed its name to Yountville in his honor. When you take legal title to Yountville real estate, your property description may often refer to “rancho caymus”—an important piece of history traceable to George C. Yount.
