Calistoga Real Estate--A cross between California and Saratoga? (Yes!)

The town of Calistoga is one of the central pillars of the Napa Valley real estate market.  The town is situated at the northern boundaries of California’s Napa Valley, about 15 minutes north of Saint Helena, and about 1.5 hours from San Francisco. It is a small town of approximately six thousand. The charming downtown presents a decidedly western ambiance. Yet it offers eclectic shops and restaurants that can satisfy the cultivated tastes of wine country visitors and local residents alike, many of whom own premier real estate holdings in and round the town. Calistoga real estate offers a diverse collection of period Victorian homes, california-style bungalows, mediterranean villas, and vacant land with opportunities for vineyard and luxury homesite development in and near many famous AVA's (American Viticultural Areas).

The Feel of Napa Valley Real Estate, with a Unique Geographic Twist

Most of the towns that dot California's Napa Valley along the Highway 29 corridor have a main street laid out in a “north/south” orientation. In Calistoga, the main street through the center of town (Lincoln) is aligned in an east/west orientation. Why mention this?  It creates an entirely different feel from other Napa Valley towns in terms of morning and afternoon light, and it results in scenic bookends at either end of the main street:  Lovely views of the Palisades mountain range when you look east (turning incredible hues of orange and purple at sunset) and--when facing west--the Mayacamas mountain range with its lush, brooding slopes.  Much of the prime real estate in and around Calistoga benefits from these amazing views.

Calistoga Real Estate is Steeped in History

The name Calistoga is a blending of “California” and “Saratoga”. In 1872, the founding father of Calistoga, Samuel Brannan, wanted to capitalize on the region’s famous volcanic hot springs (first discovered by the Wappo Indian tribe over 500 years ago). Brannan's idea was to build a health resort rivaling the famous Saratoga Springs, an east coast vacation spot for New York's rich and famous. Today, many visitors to Calistoga avail themselves of the recuperative hot springs and mud baths, along with vineyard tours, mountain hikes, long lunches (try Brannan's) and longer bike rides. The national bottled water brand “Calistoga” had an interesting beginning here. In 1920 a gentlemen named Giuseppe Musante serendipitously struck a hot geyser when he was only looking for cold water.  He capitalized on his find and bottled the mineral water for commercial sale. After a change in ownership in the 1970’s his original "Calistoga" brand ultimately grew to its present national status. Come and drink the water, or bathe in it, but enjoy it you will!

Prime Real Estate, and Famous Wine Growing Regions

If you are thinking of Calistoga real estate as an option, and you’d like your dream estate to lie within a famed American Viticultural Area (“AVA”), close to Calistoga, you have quite a few options to choose from. The famous AVA or wine growing region most commonly associated with Calistoga is called the Diamond Mountain AVA. Well-known wineries situated in and producing wines from this AVA are Von-Strasser, Graeser, Schramsburg, Reverie and Tudal among others. Calistoga is also close to the Howell Mountain AVA (check out listings in Angwin) and the Saint Helena AVA (check out listings in Saint Helena).  Travelling minutes north of Calistoga you leave Napa County and enter the wine growing regions of Sonoma called Knights Valley AVA and Alexander Valley AVA.
